This year’s theme is “Empowering Men to Speak Out Against Sexual Violence,” and panel discussions and events are being organized in all five boroughs.

CONNECT is a sponsor of 2014 Denim Day NYC, a citywide initiative to raise awareness about sexual violence, and to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Our Co-Executive Director, Quentin Walcott (Q) is one of the featured speakers at the Denim Day rally/press conference on April 23rd at noon on the steps of City Hall. The event is co-sponsored by the Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Council Member Julissa Ferreras. Other confirmed speakers are Police Commissioner Bratton (this is the first year the NYPD will participate) and Office to Combat Domestic Violence Commissioner Rose Pierre-Louis.

The genesis of Denim Day was a 1998 Italian Supreme Court decision that overturned a rape conviction on the grounds that the victim wore skinny jeans, and must have helped her attacker remove them. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence (POV), a Los Angeles-based domestic and sexual violence prevention organization, developed the Denim Day LA/USA campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. The first Denim Day NYC was held in 2010, and the event has grown in scope and stature each consecutive year.
