More about the group:
HD peer educators-in-training are an eclectic group, with varying degrees of education, work histories, and experiences that have challenged them in the United States. These men share the common experience of struggling in their intimate relationships - with women, their children and the complex and onerous tasks associated with manhood. Many of them have expressed feelings of disempowerment and hopelessness in this country. By examining the privilege and entitlement these men have in their communities, HD explores how their perceptions of manhood led them into their relationships with women, presumptions and expectations within those relationships, and their experiences as fathers.
The men of HD have signed contracts committing to continue the work of exploring this dynamic, changing their attitudes and having conversations to transform other men in their communities.
More about the facilitator:

Marlon Walker, Coordinator of CONNECT Men & Boys Programs. Marlon is a full-time trainer and educator for the CONNECT Training Institute (CTI) and CONNECT’s Community Empowerment Program (CEP).  Marlon is also one of the lead trainers for Understanding Domestic Violence: Essentials & Intersections and was co-trainer for a collaborative project called ‘Men and Women as Allies’ that trained Verizon staff and management on domestic violence and workplace bullying. Marlon has also worked as an Early Head Start teacher, family worker, and as Male Involvement Coordinator.  Marlon facilitates workshops to adolescent boys in high schools throughout NYC and is a community educator and trainer for community based programs throughout NYC.

Marlon currently facilitates ‘Hombres Dialogando’, a group for Spanish speaking men struggling with violence in their relationships (he facilitates several of these groups in the city). In facilitating dialogues with this group, Marlon creates communion while simultaneously challenging and holding them accountable for their attitudes and behavior. Over the course of six months, Marlon stimulates conversations about manhood by taking a look at the people, places and experiences that have shaped their thinking about what it is to be a man. Marlon also creatively draws parallels between the often disempowering histories these men have experienced outside of the home with the power and control they may choose to exert over their loved ones.
