Trauma Informed Treatment with Children Who Witness Domestic Violence

Thu, 11/30/2017 - 9:30am - 4:30pm
CONNECT: 127 West 127th St, Room 432; Harlem NY 10027

The Trauma Informed Treatment with Children Who Witness Domestic Violence workshop will present a general overview of children’s reaction to the trauma of witnessing Domestic Violence and initial engagement techniques to use with children.

The focus will be on using the initial sessions to develop a working alliance and a dynamic understanding of the child who has experienced trauma. A wide variety of child centered techniques will be described and practiced; including storytelling, expressive art, individual play, and group play. The interventions being taught all meet the criteria of being specific, practical, and relatively easy to implement. Clinical case material will be used to illustrate the concepts discussed and a description of play materials for working within this paradigm will be provided. Participants will be encouraged to share their own case material. Issues of transference, counter-transference and therapist self-care will also be addressed.
