Working with Children Exposed to Domestic Violence Fall 2010 (WCEDV_F2010)

7–week course on working with children exposed to domestic violence. See special note for course schedule below.

In this 7-week course, participants are trained on the impacts of trauma at different stages of development, from infancy to adolescence. The course presents play therapy techniques for individuals and groups, along with methods for nurturing children’s natural resilience and potential for healing. In order to receive a certificate you must attend all trainings within the series.

Special Note - The WCEDV course will start on Wednesday 10/27/2010 from 9am-5pm but the classes thereafter will continue on Tuesdays from 2pm-6pm starting on 11/9/2010.  Except on the last day of class Tuesday 12/21/2010 class will be from 10am-6pm.

Patricia Stern is the founder and chief consultant of Stern Steps, a consulting firm that advises government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations on policy and program management in the area of family violence. Ms. Stern provides training on addressing the issue of family violence and on improved identification and treatment of children exposed to domestic violence and child abuse, as well as on evidence-based interventions for these children. In addition, she provides consultation on program development, strategic planning and clinical supervision to initiatives focused on families impacted by domestic violence and/or child maltreatment.

 

Ms. Stern has implemented integrated treatment programs for children aged 0-12 and teenagers living with family violence, including her current work at Rachel Coalition at Jewish Family Service of MetroWest for both their Livingston office and for the Essex County Family Justice Center in Newark, NJ. Ms. Stern provides infant/child-parent psychotherapy and individual therapy and develops group therapy curriculum for children and teenagers and provides clinical supervision on these interventions.

Ms. Stern co-Chairs the Essex County Committee on Children Exposed to Domestic Violence and is leading a community assessment to better understand the needs of children who have been exposed to domestic violence and to implement the Court’s and Division of Youth and Family Services’ new protocols on co-occurrence of domestic violence and child maltreatment and to address other local and national issues related to children's exposure and co-occurrence.

 

Ms. Stern is the founder and former director of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Family PEACE Program in New York City. The program was one of 15 Safe Start Promising Approaches sites around the country funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention within the United States Department of Justice to provide developmentally appropriate services for children exposed to domestic violence and to evaluate the services’ effectiveness.

 

Ms. Stern received a dual master’s degree in Social Work and Public Health from Columbia University. She also completed a two-year training program in Child and Adolescent Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the New York University Psychoanalytic Institute. Ms. Stern was trained by Alicia Lieberman and Patricia Van Horn on ‘ A Manual for Child-Parent Psychotherapy with Young Witnesses of Family Violence. She is currently a Fellow in the Anni Bergman Parent-Infant Training Program.
